We match people in the New York area for language exchanges.
New York Language Exchange: A Quick Overview Ryan is an English-speaker living in New York. He is interested in learning Japanese. Kei is a Japanese-speaker studying in New York. He is interested in improving his English. They both register for free with New York Language Exchange. Once we match Ryan and Kei, they each pay a one-time matching fee of $30 and are sent each other's contact information. Ryan and Kei are now free to meet as frequently as they wish and teach each other their languages! They meet weekly in a coffee shop downtown. Ryan teaches Kei English for 45 minutes, then Kei teaches Ryan Japanese for the same amount of time. As time goes by, their fluencies improve and they can both carry a conversation in either language comfortably. They also develop a strong understanding of each other's cultures and customs. They marvel at the fact that this whole experience cost them only a one-time fee of $30. Everybody wins! About Language Exchanges The language exchange is an innovative concept that until recently had been informal and had not gained much ground in North America. The main advantage of language exchanges over other interactive methods of foreign language acquisition (such as university courses, classes, private tuition, group lessons) is the low cost. In comparison with what one would otherwise be paying, a one-time fee of $30 is nothing.
Another advantage is the opportunity to have a one-on-one lesson with a native speaker. This allows for great pronunciation, the opportunity to speak how the language is actually spoken (rather than textbook language), and an insight into the culture behind the language. These are advantages that cannot be offered by other inexpensive methods (such as language software, textbook-learning and online language websites).
Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)...
What languages can I learn?
English, Spanish, Korean, French, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, German, Hindi, Italian... basically, any language that someone in New York might speak. The most popular language choice is English (ESL). Luckily, about half of our registrants are English-speakers looking to study another language.
If my partner and I are not professional teachers/language tutors, how can we teach a new language?
We offer basic instructor resources to show you some methods of how to approach teaching a beginner. As students become more advanced, they become less focused on learning material and more focused on letting their fluency develop naturally through conversation.
I am not living in New York, can I still sign up?
Unfortunately, New York Language Exchange (NYLE) is only matching people who live in the New York area. However, in the near future, we plan to expand to other cities in the United States. This website will have the links to the new sites when they are available. Please contact us if you have any questions about this matter.
What are some foreign language schools in the New York? Are you associated with any of these schools?
Although we are not associated with any of the local language schools, we receive many questions about actual language courses (for those who are interested in spending more money for a planned curriculum and professional instructor). These are mostly for immigrants or visitors from other countries looking to learn English (ESL courses), but they may teach other languages and may have information on finding a good tutor. Here is a list of the institutions that we have been able to find that may offer language courses: American Academy of English, Language Pacifica, Grandom Academy, Transworld, Intrax English Institute, Prometheus School of Language, Berkely English Academy. You may also want to check out the City College of New York, New York State University, University of New York, Academy of Art College.
What are some common misspellings of your name?
Some might accidentally type langauge exchnage, or even push it all together into one word, like so: newyork.
